In the Valley of the Kings, darkness was not simply the end of the day. The sun god travelled through the night, and the king hoped to emerge renewed with him at dawn. Images and sacred texts on tomb walls helped make that journey imaginable. Nearby, Hatshepsut built her temple against the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari, while the seated Colossi of Memnon still mark the place of Amenhotep III’s once vast memorial temple.
