About
Discover the experience
The Nile was ancient Egypt’s great road: stone, goods and sacred images travelled along it. Sailing north from Aswan, we follow a route that links very different sacred places. Philae opens the world of Isis; at Kom Ombo two gods shared a temple, while Edfu belonged to the falcon god Horus. Finally, the great sanctuaries and royal tombs of Luxor bring us into ancient Thebes. Between visits, the river landscape becomes part of the story.
At Edfu, the falcon god Horus was honoured in a temple whose surviving walls preserve stories and rituals from a much later age than the pharaohs of the Valley of the Kings. At Kom Ombo, a temple shared by two gods offers another way into Egypt’s varied religious imagination.
Day by day
Your Itinerary
From Aswan’s islands to the royal landscape of Luxor, follow the Nile north through temples, river scenery and time on board.
Begin in Aswan with the dam, granite quarry and Philae’s island sanctuary, then board the ship for the journey north. At Philae, Isis was honoured as the mother of Horus, and her temple remained a place of worship long after many older sanctuaries had fallen silent. The unfinished obelisk offers a different glimpse of the past: a royal monument still joined to the granite from which it was being cut.
Your day
Stop at Aswan’s dam for a view of Lake Nasser and a look at how the river’s flow was transformed.
Duration 1 hr 30 min
See the Unfinished Obelisk still attached to the granite bedrock and discover how ancient stonecutters worked.
Duration 1 hr 30 min
Cross by boat to Philae and explore the island sanctuary of Isis, saved from the rising waters.
Duration 2 hr
Board the cruise ship, check into your cabin and settle in before the river journey.
Let the river set the pace before an evening at Kom Ombo, where a double temple and the Crocodile Museum introduce the world of Sobek. Kom Ombo has an unusual double dedication: its sanctuary honoured both the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon-headed Haroeris. Looking at the paired spaces and reliefs, we can begin to see how two divine stories shared one temple beside the Nile.
Your day
Relax on deck as the ship sails past the Nile’s fields, villages and desert shores.
Duration 7 hr
Visit the double temple of Kom Ombo and the Crocodile Museum in the evening, with about an hour and a half planned for the stop.
Duration 1 hr 30 min
Return to the cruise ship and settle in on board.
